I Pledge Allegiance To...

Who, or what, has the allegiance of your heart?

No, seriously, ask yourself this question.  This is an uber important question to be asking. Someone or something has you.  It's likely more than one thing. You/re chasing something... moment by moment...  hour by hour... day by day... Without reflection, these allegiances, and their subsequent pursuits, consume us.   Yes, they devour us, robbing us of so much more.

Here are some leading contenders...

  • Fear
  • Happiness
  • Security
  • Affirmation
  • Politics and Earthly Kingdoms
  • Power
  • Love
  • Career
  • Emotional Highs
  • Being Right
  • Health Related Pursuits (exercise, sports, weight loss, being healthy)
  • Meaning and Purpose
  • Wealth (and stuff)
  • Comfort
  • Satisfaction and Instant Gratification

I want to ask you to quickly pause, reflect, ponder where your allegiances lie.   We are prone to wander.  I am prone to wander.

Bottom line, humans are naturally inclined to pursue things in the natural world.  We are prone to selfish pursuits.  But, we are called, invited to so much more. There is an attribute that we all have, it's a longing, a quest for more.  It's a void that we try and fill with earthly things, that can only be filled with divine things.

Moses, decending the mountain, with God's words in hand, preparing to deliver a message direct from the mouth of God, that would call the people into a lasting covenant relationship with himself, found a people who had traded their allegiances for the God of their recent miraculous rescue, to a chunk of fine metal.

God said... "They have turned aside quickly out of the way that I commanded them. They have made for themselves a golden calf and have worshiped it..."  Exodus 32

Don't laugh.  You do it daily.  I do it daily.

Don't settle.  Seek the Lord above all things.  Don't settle for the things of dust and dirt, pursue the divine today.

Jesus is calling.  Come.
