Romans: Week 21

What does it mean to be truly rescued? Romans 1 through 11 takes us on one of the most breathtaking theological journeys in all of Scripture, and at its heart is a question every one of us has to wrestle with: how does a broken, wandering person find their way back to a holy God? The answer Paul gives is not what most of us expect. It is not about doing more, being better, or climbing our way up to God. Romans 3:21-26 stands as the centerpiece of the entire letter, and it opens with two of the most hopeful words in the Bible: 'but now.' Before that turning point, Paul paints an honest and uncomfortable portrait of humanity chasing significance in all the wrong places, suppressing what we know to be true, and finding ourselves further from peace than ever. But then comes the gift, what Paul calls the righteousness of God, given freely, not earned. Christ absorbs the weight of what should have fallen on us, and we receive something we could never manufacture on our own. This is what sets the Christian faith apart from every other path humanity has tried. It is not a ladder we climb; it is a hand reaching down. As we trace Paul's argument through these chapters, we find ourselves standing at the summit of something magnificent, and the only fitting response is the same one Paul arrives at: wonder, gratitude, and worship.
