Romans: Week 15

May 24, 2026    Pastor Pete Nelson

This week's exploration of Romans 8 challenges us to reconsider what it truly means when Scripture promises that God works all things together for good. We're reminded that this beloved verse doesn't guarantee only pleasant circumstances will come our way, but rather that our sovereign God orchestrates even the painful and tragic moments of our lives toward ultimate good. Through the ancient stories of Job and Joseph, we see the doctrine of concurrence at work—human evil and divine sovereignty operating simultaneously. Job lost everything through the actions of wicked people and natural disaster, yet maintained his trust in God's character. Joseph suffered betrayal by his own brothers, yet recognized God's hand transforming intended harm into the salvation of many. These accounts teach us that God's sovereignty doesn't eliminate human responsibility or the reality of evil, but it does mean nothing catches Him by surprise. When we face the darkest valleys—devastating loss, illness, abuse, or circumstances that defy explanation—we stand at a crossroads. We can either curse God and walk away in bitterness, or we can echo Job's profound question: Should we accept good from God and not trouble? This message invites us to trust God's heart when we cannot trace His hand, holding fast in the darkness to what we learned in the light.
